2nd Wii remote can't be added

My hubby wanted to race against me last night, but we couldn't get it to recognize the 2nd remote / nunchuck. (Both work perfectly when we use them on other 2 player games) We tried pressing the red reset button...tried various things that we read on the board, but no luck.
What are we doing wrong? Both were fully charged.|||I think the 2nd Wii Remote can only be activated in multiplayer mode. To do that you have to select 'Workout with a Friend', then a pop-up will prompt you to turn on your Wii Remote. I think that if you try to activate it in gameplay then it'll just turn off.

Note: I wish some developer in EA reads this, because Wii sports makes it so easy to go and do this! We don't have to go through this with any other game!
"To add a player on the game you will need to first synchronize your controllers. Then start the game once all of the controllers are synchronized.
Here are some things that may help you out on how to synchronize your Wii Remote:
- Press the Power button on the Wii console to turn it on.
- Remove the battery cover on the back of the Wii Remote you wish to sync up, and open the SD Card Slot cover on the front of the Wii console. (The SD Card Slot is the small door located near the disc drive slot.)
- Press and release the SYNC button just below the batteries on the Wii Remote; the Player LED will blink. Quickly press and release the SYNC button on the inside of the SD Card compartment on the console.
-When the Player LED blinking stops, the syncing is complete. The LED that is illuminated indicates the player number (1 through 4).
**This procedure must be followed for each additional Wii Remote added to the system.
**If you are still unable to get the Wii Remote to work, try the following:
-Unplug the Wii console and re sync.
-Unplug the power cord from the console, and let it sit for at least a few seconds.
-After letting the Wii console sit unplugged, plug the power cord back into the Wii console.
**If ever you still unable to re sync your Wii Remote we recommend that you contact Nintendo for this so they can assist you properly."
